| North Fork / Navajo Lake Road |
|
This tour is open year round, with some precautions for the north end of the trail in winter seasons, with elevations reaching well above 8500 feet above sea level. Leave SURV from east entrance of Zion National Park. Turn left off Hwy 9 approximately 10.4 miles east of the East Zion entrance, dropping trailers and moving forward on ATVs from there. Ride north on trail, crossing over several washes and mountains. 11 miles into trail is the turnoff for Chamberlains Ranch, the starting point of "The Narrows" in Zion National Park. This is also the starting point of the North fork of the Virgin River and the trail running alongside each other. We continue north until the trail takes us just southwest of Navajo Lake, an increase in elevation of over 2500 feet from the starting point. The trail then turns southwest, down to the lookout over Cogswell Point, a definite must see on the tour. After a half-hour lunch break, the trail then continues north for the remainder of the trip--13.2 miles from Cogswell Point to Deer Haven Campground, the end point for this particular tour. (For current tour, the trail will end at the entrance to Dixie National Forest, approx 0.7 miles northwest of Aspen Lake, until Forest Service Permits are secured.) Total miles, .3 one-way, .6 round trip. Total trip, 3 hours one-way, 5.5 round trip.
